It feels good to be India's first female rapper: Hard Kaur

Hard Kaur She may have been knocked out of the ‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’ contest on television, but Hard Kaur is keeping her chin up. She says it’s a great feeling to be India’s first female rapper.

Known well for her naughty streak and unique style of rapping, Hard Kaur began her musical journey much before the hit single ‘Ek Glassy’ catapulted her to overnight stardom in India. Her first solo album ‘Supawoman’ cemented her place as the first female rapper in India.

“It feels good to be India's first female rapper and a role model for the youth. But I say, just look at yourself! For me the meaning of a star is someone who didn't compromise and did exactly what they wanted to do. To believe in yourself is the key to stardom,” Hard Kaur is quoted as saying by a news agency.

Speaking about her stint on ‘Jhalak Dikhla Ja’, she said: “We make fun of reality shows from the outside. But it was brilliant, although I had to be careful. This was a dance show and I always wanted to dance.”

The saucy rapper added that even though she’s eliminated from the show, she got a lot of love from the audience.

“Just be yourself, and look how much love I got from the audience,” said the Punjab-born rapper who’s already made a foray into playback singing for films.

Her song ‘Move your body’ in Johnny Gaddaar is still played at many a party. But Hard Kaur credits the music director trio of Shankar Ehsaan Loy for the song’s success.

“Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy took a big risk when they took me for the film. If the song was a success, the credit goes to them,” she said.

Recalling her struggle as an artiste, she reminisced: “To become an artiste is easier in India because the English society is predominantly male dominated. As an amateur whenever I used to perform, the boys always got their payment but I was left stranded at times.”

Today, as a successful hip-hop singer, she feels the music is catching up with people in India.

“I fell in love with hip-hop and now I see people in India are grooving to it in their day-to-day lives,” she signs off.
