Badhai Ho Badhai is a family entertainer full of humor and pathos. It is the story of a man’s effort to reconcile the differences between two feuding families – the Punjabi Chaddhas and the catholic D’ Souzas.
The film is full of unexpected twists and turns. Firstly there is the sudden entry of ‘fat man’ Raja (Anil Kapoor) into the two feuding families. Then there is the appearance of Banto Betty (Shilpa Shetty) who claims to be Raja’s wife.
Post-interval, there is an interesting one-sided romance between Raja and Florence (Kirti Reddy), while Banto Betty seems sidelined with unrequited love for Raja.
In Badhai Ho Badhai Anil Kapoor’s obese act as Raja seems to be a take-off on Eddie Murphy in Nutty Professor. In fact, Anil’s make-up in the film is done by Mathew Moogly (of WF Creations) who did special effects for Peter Segal’s Nutty Professor.
Moreover, Anil gained about ten kilograms to play his roly-poly character in the film.
Shilpa Shetty shows her flair for comedy playing a Punjabi girl Banto Betty. Her crude Punjabi accent and body language is funny and shows that Shilpa is a versatile actress. Kirti Reddy, however, plays the glam gal Florence with ease although her role is just a marginal one.
Satish Kaushik has made a daring attempt to come up with something different from the usual Bollywood kitsch. The plot is innovative and the character of over-obese Raja, quite hilarious. Overall the film is entertaining and makes for good viewing.
